Colonials set for four games over three days
GW women's water polo continues its season this weekend, playing four games over three days at the Bucknell Invitational.
The Colonials begin the tournament with a Friday night matchup vs. La Salle at Kinney Natatorium in Lewisburg, Pa. They'll play a doubleheader vs. Salem University and Saint Francis (Pa.) on Saturday before wrapping up with a single game opposite Gannon on Sunday.
LAST TIME OUT:Â GW opened its season last weekend with four competitive games in Philadelphia. The Colonials finished 1-3 with all the setbacks decided by two goals or fewer.
Alana Ponce led the way, posting 19 goals on the weekend. The junior from Washington netted at least four goals in each game, finishing the run with a five-goal performance in Sunday's 12-6 win over St. Francis Brooklyn.
Juliette Belanger and Kira Bruno notched five scores apiece.
NEW IN NET:Â First-year Mackenzie Matheny made her collegiate debut between the pipes, totaling 35 saves on the opening weekend.
Matheny stopped 45.5 percent of the shots she faced over the four games. The Australia native saved her best for last, limiting St. Francis Brooklyn to one goal in each of the first three periods in an eight-save effort. Her weekend high of 12 stops came vs. Villanova.
SCOUTING THE COMPETITION:Â The first two games of the weekend are rematches from the opening weekend.
GW fell to La Salle, 12-10, in its season opener before dropping an 11-10 decision to Salem in the first game of their Sunday doubleheader. The Explorers are off to a 1-2 start, while the Tigers finished the opening weekend 4-0.
Saint Francis (Pa.) went 2-2 in its debut weekend at the Bruno Classic. Gannon will be making its season debut at Bucknell.
COMING UP:Â GW is back in action next weekend at the Princeton Invitational. The Colonials will face LIU, St. Francis Brooklyn and Wagner over two days at DeNunzio Pool in Princeton, N.J.
