Colonials hung tough vs. nationally-ranked Tigers
WASHINGTON - Making its first and only appearance of the season at Smith Center Pool, GW women's water polo hung tough in a 12-8 setback vs. No. 20 Princeton on Saturday afternoon.
Alana Ponce celebrated her Senior Day in style, posting four goals and three assists to lead the Colonials in their Collegiate Water Polo Association opener.
GW honored Ponce, Kira Bruno, Allison DeCicco and Marina Daroca Bazán during pregame Senior Day festivities and then put forth a spirited effort vs. the nationally-ranked Tigers before an energetic home crowd.
The Colonials trailed 5-1 after one quarter and 10-5 at the halftime break before surging back with an impressive third quarter. The Colonials shut out the Tigers in the period and scored three times to pull within two goals.
Bruno tallied back-to-back scores to start the run before Ponce's final goal made it 10-8 with 1:54 left in the third.
The Colonials had several chances to get even closer early in the fourth but could not convert. The Tigers scored on a 5-meter penalty shot with 4:59 remaining and added another goal 99 seconds later to set the final margin.
A 2019 All-CWPA First Team pick, Ponce continued her sterling season by factoring in on seven of GW's eight goals. She also paced the Buff and Blue with three steals.
Bruno recorded two goals and an assist in her final game at Smith Center Pool, and Katherine Atherton and Juliette Belanger also found the net vs. Princeton.
Mackenzie Matheny made nine saves in the GW net. The first-year goalkeeper held the Tigers scoreless for more than 11 minutes to begin the second half.
