Colonials kick off CWPA play vs. nationally-ranked Tigers
The Colonials will honor Marina Daroca Bazán, Kira Bruno, Allison DeCicco and Alana Ponce in a ceremony starting at 11:45 a.m. before facing the nationally-ranked Tigers.
LAST TIME OUT:Â GW had a break last week after three consecutive weekends in the pool to start the season.Â
The Colonials were last in action on Feb. 15-16 at the Princeton Invitational where they finished the weekend with a 9-5 win over St. Francis Brooklyn to improve to 5-6 on the season. Bruno, DeCicco, Juliette Belanger and Katherine Atherton scored two goals apiece vs. the Terriers, while goalkeeper Mackenzie Matheny stopped 11 shots to anchor a strong defensive effort.
HURRAY FOR PONCE: Over two and a half seasons, Ponce has claimed her place among the top student-athletes in program history, earning All-CWPA honors in both 2018 and 2019. Last season, the Gig Harbor, Wash., native became the first Colonial in six years to earn First Team All-Conference recognition.
Despite heavy attention from opposing defenses, Ponce has 41 goals through 11 games this season to give her 154 for her career, which ranks eighth all-time at GW. With more than a dozen games left to go, she has 211 career points, plus 91 steals, 81 ejections drawn and 34 field blocks. The Real Estate major is set to graduate in just three years.
SENIOR SALUTE: Bruno and DeCicco are both four-year members of the program. Bruno enters play Saturday tied for second on the team with 15 goals on the season to give her 88 career points (57 goals, 31 assists), while DeCicco has totaled 44 points (26 goals, 18 assists) as a member of the Buff and Blue, including 14 this season. Both are three-time ACWPC All-Academic honorees.
Daroca Bazán has made an instant impact since joining the Colonials as a graduate student after three years at Whittier College. From Barcelona, Spain, she ranks second on the team in points with 15 goals and 15 assists.
SCOUTING PRINCETON:Â The Tigers have won four straight games to improve to 6-3 on the season. All three of their losses have come to ranked opponents, and they own a win over then-No. 22 San Diego State.
Princeton will have a quick turnaround to the CWPA contest after hosting Villanova in non-league action on Friday night.
UP NEXT:Â GW will spend Spring Break on the West Coast with six games over seven days, starting with an appearance at San Diego State's Aztec Invitational on March 14-15.
