Junior becomes program's first All-America pick
BRIDGEPORT, Pa. - Alana Ponce made GW women's water polo history Monday, becoming the first Colonial to earn All-America honors from the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches.
The junior from Gig Harbor, Wash., landed Honorable Mention recognition after posting 45 goals and 18 assists over 12 games before the season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
"Congratulations to Alana for this honor," GW head coach Barry King said. "She selflessly accepted an increased workload this season because she knew that is how she could help the team be as good as it could be. She faced the full attention of the defense trying to stop her and was still very productive. More importantly, she made her teammates better."
A two-time CWPA All-Conference selection, Ponce had her third season in Buff and Blue off to a tremendous start, scoring at least four times in nine of 12 outings. She was named CWPA Player of the Week on Feb. 11 after sparking the Colonials to a winning weekend at the Bucknell Invitational, highlighted by a four-goal, two-assist effort in a 12-10 victory over Salem University.
In addition to her team-high 63 points, Ponce also paced GW in ejections drawn (23), steals (19) and field blocks (15). Her .413 shooting percentage was best among Colonials, as well.
Thanks to that impressive production, Ponce moved into the program's all-time top 10 in career goals (158, eighth) and points (218, 10th) this season.
