
Lacrosse Falls in Season Opener at Temple

PHILADELPHIA – The George Washington lacrosse team dropped its season opener to Temple, 17-8, on Saturday afternoon at Howarth Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Owls were quick to strike, firing off a trio of goals in the opening three minutes of play to get out front early. The Colonials responded with a goal of their own from Catie Perkins before Temple was able to notch another tally one minute later.
Senior co-captain Katie Quinn gave GW its second of the day, but the Owls continued to push offensively and found the back of the net four more times to hold an 8-2 advantage with 10:35 to play in the half. The Buff and Blue began to heat up in the remaining minutes of the game's first stanza, finding the back of the net three more times with goals from Maddy O'Brien, Kendall Lambert and Caroline Kiernan. Temple scored two more goals to lead 10-5 going into the break.
GW was first to strike in the second half with a goal from Morgan McDonnell, but the relentless Owls offense went on to score five straight to lead 15-6 with 9:33 remaining on the clock. Kiernan and Lambert added one more each, but Temple scored a pair of their own to finish the day with the 17-8 victory.
NOTEWORTHY
• The pair of Kiernan and Lambert paced the squad with two goals apiece while McDonnell, Perkins, Quinn and O'Brien scored one each.
• Temple finished the day with a 32-25 advantage in ground balls. Junior defender Cassie Scandalios topped the team with five, while Perkins followed closely behind with four of her own.
• The Colonials registered 27 shots on the day, 21 of which came on goal. Ioanna Mantzouratos paced the team with eight shots, firing six on target.
• McDonnell and Mantzouratos both tallied two assists on the day.
• Keeper Megan Patrick made her first career start between the pipes at Temple, making 12 saves.
• Kianah Watson, Amber Germer and Lizzie Heyn all made their first appearance in the Buff and Blue in Philadelphia.

The Colonials will continue their season opening road swing next Saturday, Feb. 15 when they head to Emmitsburg, Md. to face Mount St. Mary's. Opening draw is set for 11 a.m.
