Colonials topped by the Mount in overtime, 11-10
EMMITSBURG, Md. – In its second road test of 2020, the George Washington lacrosse team put up a fight at Mount St. Mary's, but ultimately fell, 11-10, in overtime on Saturday morning.
HOW IT HAPPENED
GW was first to get on the board, with Ioanna Mantzouratos finding the back of the net just two minutes into the contest. The Mount responded just one minute later, but Katie Quinn took a pass from fellow-senior Morgan McDonnell to put the Colonials back out front by one. Tori Hampton added to GW's scoring effort at the 17-minute mark to put GW ahead 3-1, but the Mount regained the lead at the 9:39 mark after three straight strikes. The Buff and Blue continued to battle and finished the half on top, 5-4, as Quinn, McDonnell, and first-year Amber Germer found the back of the net.
The back-and-forth battle continued in the game's second stanza. The Mount were the first to strike after the break with a goal at the 24:28 mark, but GW pushed back with a goal of its own from Hampton, her second of the game. The two squads continued to trade goals, until Mount St. Mary's scored back-to-back tallies to hold a 10-9 advantage with 7:05 to play. With the clock ticking down, Quinn was able to dart around the Mount defense and tie the game at 10 and push the contest to overtime.
In the extra frame, the Mount came out hot, quickly snagging the draw and scoring at the 4:26 mark to claim the 11-10 victory.
NOTEWORTHY
• The Colonials were able to stay neck-and-neck with the Mount, who were selected to finish second in the Northeast Conference preseason poll. The Mountaineers also returned seven, 30+ point scorers on offense from last year's squad.
• Quinn finished the day with a team-high four goals while McDonnell and Hampton scored two each. Mantzouratos and Germer also added to the Colonials' offensive effort with one apiece.
• Germer's tally marks the first of her career.
• GW finished the day with a 13-10 advantage off the draw, with co-captain Caroline Kiernan pacing the squad with six. Catie Perkins also had a strong game off the draw, snagging four of her own.
• In her second career start, keeper Megan Patrick finished the day with nine saves.
UP NEXT: The Colonials will wrap their season-opening road swing on Saturday, Feb. 22 when they head to Durham, N.C., to face Duke at 1 p.m.
