Colonials battled BYU and Utah Valley on Thursday
PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico - Looking to follow up last spring's historic run to a share of the A-10 title, GW softball has welcomed the season-opening test of facing a decorated field on foreign soil at the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge.
The Colonials kicked off their 2020 campaign on Thursday, dropping a doubleheader at Nancy Almaraz Stadium. The opener featured a tremendous pitchers' duel with the Buff and Blue falling 1-0 on a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh. They ceded the second game to Utah Valley, 9-1, in five innings.
GW will be challenged with three more contests vs. quality competition in Mexico, starting with Friday's matchup vs. Oregon under the lights.
BYU 1, GW 0: Ava Huntyr's RBI single with two outs in the seventh brought home Marissa Chavez to win it for the Cougars, who have claimed six straight WCC titles.
Faith Weber turned in an excellent effort in the circle to begin her senior season, holding BYU scoreless through 6 2/3 innings. The New Jersey native battled from start to finish, navigating eight walks by digging deep with runners on base.
Weber had allowed just one hit -- an infield single in the opening inning -- before the Cougars came up with back-to-back two-out knocks to score the game's lone run. She largely pitched to contact with just one strikeout, taking advantage of a defense that played error-free.
BYU's Autumn Moffat earned the victory after allowing just two hits in seven shutout innings. GW managed four base runners in the opener with Jenna Cone and Priscilla Martinez each reaching twice.
GW's best scoring chance came in the fourth inning with a push started by Cone's leadoff single. Pinch runner Paris Orchard moved to second on a sac bunt and stole third but was stranded there as Moffat induced a popout and a groundout.
Utah Valley 9, GW 1 (5 innings): The Wolverines scored three runs in the first inning and six more in the second on the way to a run-rule victory.
Utah Valley utilized three straight two-out hits to do its damage in the first and then took advantage of four walks to tack on and set the final margin in the second.
Alessandra Ponce knocked in Jessica Linquist with a first-inning groundout for GW's lone run. Orchard picked up her first career hit in her first collegiate at-bat in the fourth inning.
ON DECK: After Friday's showdown with Oregon, GW closes out its stay in Mexico on Saturday with a doubleheader vs. Long Beach State and No. 3 Oklahoma.
WATCH THIS: Hear from head coach Shane Winkler and Weber after the doubleheader.
