Trio honored after meet at West Virginia
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - A trio of George Washington swimmers have garnered Atlantic 10 weekly honors for their efforts last Saturday at West Virginia.
Haoning Chen and Andrea Ho were named Performers of the Week, while Tyler Kawakami picked up his second Rookie of the Week award of the season.
In his first semester representing the Buff and Blue, Chen has proven an excellent addition to the squad. The graduate student's performance vs. the Mountaineers was highlighted by a win in the 200 breast in 2:05.61. He was also third in the 100 breast (:56.32) and part of two strong relay swims, including a first-place finish in the 400 free relay in 3:04.02.
Ho posted two individual wins and added a relay victory in GW's final competition ahead of the upcoming A-10 Championships. The junior from Australia took the 100 back in 56.45 seconds before claiming the 200 back in 2:03.35. She also had a hand in a victory in the 200 medley relay in 1:44.44.
Kawakami scored in three individual events at WVU. The first-year from Hawaii's top finish was a runner-up showing in the 50 free in 21.03 seconds, and he also placed third in the 100 free (:45.77) and fourth in the 100 fly (:51.92).
It's the first career Performer of the Week award for both Chen and Ho. Kawakami was previously honored as the conference's top rookie following GW's win vs. Howard on Nov. 9.
GW is busy making final preparations for the A-10 Championships, which run Feb. 19-22 at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
