Colonial to represent Philippines in China
WASHINGTONÂ - Sierra Lange of George Washington softball will try to clinch a spot in the 2020 Olympics this week, representing the Philippines on the diamond at the WBSC Softball Asia/Oceania Olympic Qualifier in Shanghai, China.
Lange, a Texas native who has Filipino heritage on her mother's side, has represented the Asian nation in international competition over the past four summers. Most recently, the GW junior took the field at the USA Softball International Cup in July, seeing action both pitching and hitting.
Lange gets set to chase her Olympic dream following a historic sophomore campaign in which she helped the Colonials earn a share of their first Atlantic 10 title and first postseason appearance.Â
She collected First Team All-Conference and NFCA All-Region honors after ranking among the national leaders in wins (31), strikeouts (246), batting average (.411), hits (85) and triples (six).
Lange fueled the Buff and Blue's success at the A-10 Championship by pitching all 28 innings to earn a spot on the All-Championship Team, and she was also recognized on the All-Liberty Regional Team for her excellence at the National Invitational Softball Championship.
"I'm excited for Sierra to have this opportunity to compete for a spot in the Olympics," GW head coach Shane Winkler said. "She's worked extremely hard to give herself and the Philippines the best shot at making the 2020 Games. She means a lot to our program, and I'm proud that she gets to represent GW at the highest level."
The winner of the eight-team Asia/Oceania Olympic Qualifier will advance to compete in the Tokyo Games next July.Â
Ranked No. 13 in the world, the Philippines is slotted in Group A along with Korea, New Zealand and host China. They will play each team in the Opening Round before the top two in the group advance to the Super Round to determine the champion.
The United States, Mexico, Canada and Italy have already clinched Olympic berths, in addition to host nation Japan.
