Colonials play four games at Bucknell Invitational
The 14th-ranked Colonials tackle a challenging doubleheader Saturday vs. No. 14 St. Francis Brooklyn (10:30 a.m.) and No. 12 Harvard (7:15 p.m.). On Sunday, they'll face Johns Hopkins (10:30 a.m.) and Salem (4:45 p.m.) to close the weekend at Kinney Natatorium, which will host the MAWPC Championship in November.
LAST TIME OUT:Â GW sits at 7-1 on the season after winning three out of four games at the Princeton Invitational. The Colonials closed the weekend in fantastic fashion by sweeping a doubleheader vs. No. 20 Brown and No. 14 Princeton.
Playing in his hometown, Andrew Mavis led the GW offense on the weekend, piling up 12 goals and eight ejections drawn.
Gabriele Simonti was named MAWPC Defensive Player of the Week after a record-breaking effort in the weekend finale. The junior from Italy set a program single-game mark with seven field blocks in a 13-12 defeat of the host Tigers. Over the four games, he totaled 11 field blocks and four steals, plus eight goals.
AWESOME ADDITION:Â A transfer from Orange Coast Community College, Simonti leads the Colonials in field blocks (13) and steals (11). He also ranks fourth on the squad with 12 goals, finding the net in seven of the eight contests thus far.
TAYLOR TIME:Â Matt Taylor is off to an excellent start in net with 101 saves against 73 goals allowed through eight games, good for a .581 save percentage.
The graduate student from New Zealand has made double-digit saves five times already this season, including a career-high 19 stops in a 15-7 win over Santa Clara last Saturday.
Taylor has also notched six assists and six steals this season.
SCOUTING ST. FRANCIS BROOKLYN:Â The Terriers (5-3) are part of a four-way tie that includes GW at No. 14 in the latest CWPA national poll.
St. Francis Brooklyn went 2-2 at the Princeton Invitational, including a 10-6 win over the Colonials last Saturday night.
SCOUTING HARVARD:Â The Crimson is off to a 5-0 start, highlighted by a 12-11 win over then-No. 9 UC San Diego last weekend.
GW and Harvard will meet again Oct. 19 as part of the Harvard Invitational.
SCOUTING JOHNS HOPKINS:Â The Blue Jays beat Iona, 15-13, last Saturday to improve to 2-5 on the season.
This is the first of three meetings this season between the MAWPC foes and will not count in the conference standings.
SCOUTING SALEM:Â The Tigers enter the weekend at 4-4 after splitting a pair of games last weekend at the Mercyhurst Invitational.
The Buff and Blue downed Salem, 17-4, behind six goals from Jordan Blosser on the opening day of the season at Air Force.
UP NEXT:Â GW opens its MAWPC slate next weekend with a road trip that includes stops at Fordham and Wagner on Saturday and a visit to La Salle on Sunday.
