Colonials fell to pair of ranked foes Saturday
LEWISBURG, Pa. - GW men's water polo dropped a pair of contests vs. ranked foes Saturday to begin the Bucknell Invitational.
The 14th-ranked Colonials fell 11-7 to No. 14 St. Francis Brooklyn before being defeated by No. 12 Harvard, 13-8, in the nightcap at Kinney Natatorium.
St. Francis Brooklyn 11, GW 7:Â The Terriers scored four of the first five goals and led the Colonials (7-3) the rest of the way in the opener.
GW edged within 4-3 by the end of the opening quarter, but St. Francis Brooklyn answered with three straight goals to seize momentum again.
Josh Yardley and Antonin Kralj scored two goals apiece to lead the Buff and Blue. Andrew Mavis, Jordan Blosser and Chris Lee also scored vs. the Terriers.
Harvard 13, GW 8:Â Andras Levai scored five times, but the Colonials couldn't keep up with the Crimson in the second game.
After Harvard charged out to a 6-1 lead, GW answered back with five of the next six goals. Levai's tally with 5:29 left in the opening half pulled the Colonials within 7-6.
The Crimson netted the final goal of the first half and then added four straight after the intermission to pull away. Its defense yielded just two goals over the final 21 minutes in the victory.
In addition to Levai's team-high total, GW got scores from Lee, Nick Schroeder, Henry Maas vs. Harvard.
UP NEXT:Â The Colonials close their stay in Pennsylvania with a Sunday doubleheader vs. Johns Hopkins (10:30 a.m.) and Salem (4:45 p.m.).
