Sierra Lange earned 31st win of the season
LYNCHBURG, Va. - GW softball extended its stay at the National Invitational Softball Championship with a 2-1 win over Appalachian State in Friday morning elimination game at the Liberty Regional.
The Colonials advance to face Marshall later Friday to continue the double-elimination regional. It's a 7 p.m. start at Liberty Softball Stadium.
After splitting a pair of games on the opening day of the regional, GW waited out a 50-minute rain delay and then found a way to take down the Mountaineers behind the excellent pitching of Sierra Lange.
GW (44-17) jumped on the Mountaineers by scoring both of its runs in the opening frame. The Colonials loaded the bases with an HBP and two walks to set up Alessandra Ponce's RBI single. Elena Shelepak followed with a sac fly to score Jenna Cone and make it 2-0.
That proved to be enough for Lange, who stymied the Mountaineers to earn her 31st victory of the season. The All A-10 First Team pitcher allowed a run on four hits with eight strikeouts.
After allowing a run in the third inning, Lange locked in and faced the minimum the rest of the way. She retired 12 of the final 13 batters she faced with the only base runner eliminated by a caught stealing.
In addition to Ponce's RBI single, Hannah Eslick and Faith Weber also recorded hits for the Colonials.
The winner between GW and Marshall will need three more wins Saturday to claim the NISC Liberty Regional and advance to next week's championship round in Fort Collins, Colo. The Colonials edged the Thundering Herd, 4-1, to open the tournament on Thursday afternoon.
