Sophomore hit .750 in a 5-0 week for the Colonials
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - George Washington's Alessandra Ponce was named Atlantic 10 Softball Player of the Week on Monday after helping to slug the Colonials to a perfect 5-0 mark last week, including a weekend sweep of Saint Louis in conference play.
Ponce hit .750 (9-for-12) with a 1.583 slugging percentage, totaling seven RBIs and five runs scored. The sophomore from Nevada recorded four multi-hit and three multi-RBI efforts on the week. Six of her nine hits went for extra bases with four doubles and a pair of home runs.
On Wednesday, Ponce went 3-for-3 with a single, a double and a home run with two RBIs and two runs scored in a 6-2 win over Delaware State.
Ponce hit another long ball Saturday as the Colonials beat Saint Louis, 7-0, in the first game of a doubleheader and then cracked a pair of doubles to help them win the second game, 9-1 in five innings. In Sunday's 12-4 win to complete the sweep, Ponce went 2-for-2 with a walk, highlighted by a two-run double.
It's the first A-10 weekly award for Ponce, who was named to the All-Conference Second Team and All-Rookie Team last spring. She's the third Colonial to take the honor this season, joining Jenna Cone (Feb. 25, March 11) and Jessica Linquist (Feb. 11).
Riding the five-game winning streak, GW (30-11, 6-3 A-10) returns to action Saturday to kick off a weekend series at first-place Massachusetts.
