Colonials fall to Richmond, 4-1
ORLANDO, Fla. -- The George Washington women's tennis team put up a fight in Friday evening's semifinal against No. 6 seed Richmond, but came up short in a 4-1 setback that ended the Colonials' season.
The squad dropped the early doubles point to start their evening. Despite a win from the No. 2 duo of Sara Grubac and Katarina Marinkovikj, GW fell at Nos. 1 and 3 to go down by one heading into singles action.
Melis Bayraktaroglu gave the Buff and Blue its first point of the day, defeating Dessi Zlaeteva in a straight set 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 2 to close the overall score to 2-1. The Spiders responded with a win at No. 1, but the Colonials continued to battle and pushed each of the final three matches to a third set. A Richmond win at No. 5 stifled the Colonials' comeback as the Spiders notched the decisive fourth victory to finish the night on top.
GW graduates a trio of seniors in Maria Siopacha, Grubac, and Victoria Kogan and will return Bayraktaroglu, Marinkovikj, and Xenia de Luna next season.
