GW comes out on top in Clash of the Colonials
WASHINGTON — In its fifth straight game in the District, the George Washington lacrosse team welcomed Robert Morris to the GW Lacrosse Field on the Mount Vernon Campus on Saturday afternoon for the Clash of the Colonials. After trailing for three minutes in the first half, GW gained the lead at the 21:48 mark and went on to hold its advantage for the remainder of the game, earning the 12-6 victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Robert Morris was the first to strike, finding the back of the net at the 27:06 mark to get on the board. The visiting Colonials, however, did not hold their lead for long, as the Buff and Blue answered back with four straight tallies to establish a 4-1 advantage halfway through the first stanza. Robert Morris began to press on attack and scored back-to-back goals, but GW finished the half with a trio of tallies from captain Caroline Kiernan, Katie Quinn, and Ioanna Mantzouratos to go into the break with a 7-3 lead.
GW continued its momentum in the second half with man up goals from Kiernan and Quinn before Robert Morris's Meghan Crouse scored back-to-back unassisted goals to bring the score within four (GW 9-5). The two teams traded goals once more before the Buff and Blue was able to covert off Robert Morris turnovers with two straight strikes from Mantzouratos and McDonnell to cement their 12-6 home victory.
NOTEWORTHY
The Colonials will split their final non-conference games on the road and at home. GW will first make the trip to Mount St. Mary's on March 13th for a 4 p.m. matchup before hosting Monmouth at the GW Lacrosse Field on March 16th at 1 p.m.
