Colonials visit No. 15 Princeton on Saturday
LAST TIME OUT:Â GW (3-3) split a pair of doubleheaders at the Red Fox Invitational on Feb. 23-24, picking up victories over Iona and St. Francis Brooklyn.
Alana Ponce continued to lead the Colonials, totaling 13 goals with eight steals and three ejections drawn in the tournament hosted by Marist. The sophomore from Gig Harbor, Wash., netted a season-high seven goals in the 12-10 victory over St. Francis Brooklyn.
Juliette Belanger, a first-year from Ottawa, Canada, scored in all four games on the weekend, highlighted by a four-goal effort in the 13-9 win over Iona. Through six games, she leads the Colonials in ejections drawn (10) and ranks tied for second in goals (12).
SET FOR CWPA PLAY:Â Last season, GW picked up CWPA victories over Harvard, Brown and St. Francis (Pa.) to finish in the middle of the pack in the always-competitive conference.
The Colonials will play their final five conference games this spring over the first two weekends of April at Harvard and Bucknell. The regular season standings will determine seeding for the CWPA Championship, which will be held April 26-28 at Brown.
SOPHOMORE SENSATIONS:Â A pair of sophomores have set the pace for a club without any seniors.
After earning All-CWPA Second Team honors last season, Ponce is GW's top scorer again. She has posted 23 goals through six games, converting nearly 55 percent of her shot attempts.
Jaleh Moaddeli has stuffed the stat sheet in the early going. In addition to scoring 12 goals, the sophomore from California leads the Buff and Blue in assists (10), steals (14), field blocks (5) and shooting percentage (57.1 percent).
SCOUTING PRINCETON:Â The Tigers enter Saturday's game 10-4 with four wins over ranked competition. They moved up in the national rankings after scoring overtime victories vs. then-No. 15 Harvard (7-6) and then-No. 24 Cal Baptist (11-10) last weekend at the Crimson Invitational.
Goalkeeper Marissa Webb was named CWPA Defensive Player of the Week after registering 35 saves over three games. She's stopped 54.9 percent of the shots she's faced this season.
UP NEXT:Â GW will spend spring break in California with road contests against Cal State East Bay, Fresno State and Fresno Pacific on the schedule next week.
