Softball Falls in Extra Innings at Carolina Classic

Colonials came up short vs. Fairfield on Saturday
The Colonials rallied from a four-run hole to force extra innings, but the Stags scored a two-out run in the top of the eighth and held on for the victory.
After three wins over two days, including a pair over Power 5 opponents, to open the tournament, GW (10-3) nearly completed the comeback against Fairfield.
Down 5-1, GW scored four straight runs to tie it. Marta Fuentes led off the fifth with a walk and later scored on a groundout by Jenna Cone.
The Colonials then scored three more in the sixth. Morgan Kummer provided an RBI single to score Criza Bulanadi before pinch hitter Priscilla Martinez brought home Kummer and Olivia Ortlieb with a two-run double to make it 5-5.
Fairfield recovered to take it, though. The Stags scored an unearned run in the eighth on Courtney Hankins' two-out single off Sierra Lange.
In the bottom of the inning, Sidney Bloomfield reached with a bunt single, but she was stranded at second as Fairfield closed out the victory.
Elena Shelepak stayed hot with a three-hit effort. The junior infielder has nine hits in 14 at-bats through four games at the Carolina Classic.
Kummer got the start behind the plate and produced her first career multi-hit game. The first-year from Wisconsin finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
First-year Megan Osterhaus started in the circle and matched the longest outing of her collegiate career, holding the Stags to two runs over four innings. Faith Weber recorded four outs in relief to maintain her perfect ERA to open the season.
UP NEXT:Â GW closes out the Carolina Classic on Sunday with a 2 p.m. matchup against UNC Greensboro. (Note: The start time has been moved up due to rain in the forecast.) The Colonials kick off a 17-game homestand on Tuesday with a doubleheader against Howard at noon.
