Alana Ponce totaled 10 goals over two games Saturday
PRINCETON, N.J. -Â George Washington women's water polo kicked off the 2019 season Saturday with a doubleheader split at the Princeton Invitational.
Alana Ponce scored five goals in the opener to pace the Colonials to a 13-10 win over St. Francis Brooklyn before they fell to Villanova, 14-11, in the nightcap at DeNunzio Pool.
A 2018 All-CWPA Second Team honoree, Ponce totaled 10 goals on the day, while Jaleh Moaddeli racked up six goals, four assists and eight steals in the season-opening doubleheader.
GW 13, St. Francis Brooklyn 10:Â The Colonials used a third-quarter burst to take down the Terriers in their season opener.
GW led 7-6 in the opening minute of the second half before running off four straight goals to close the third, including three straight from Ponce. Ally Jochim's score with 2:16 left in the period extended the advantage to 11-6.
From there, the Colonials never let St. Francis Brooklyn get closer than three goals the rest of the way with fourth-quarter goals from first-years Juliette Belanger and Hayden Carlson helping the Buff and Blue close out the victory.
Ponce led the way with her five goals, while Moaddeli filled the stat sheet with three goals, two assists and five steals. Carlson scored twice in her collegiate debut with Belanger, Jochim and Emma Shaffer also finding the net.
Samantha Runyon made six saves in net, limiting the Terriers to just a pair of goals between the second and third periods to help GW take control.
Villanova 14, GW 11:Â The Colonials jumped out to an early lead, but it was the Wildcats who surged late to take the victory.
GW scored the first four goals and continued to lead until Villanova tied it at 6 with 1:56 left in the opening half. The teams went back-and-forth out of the break with Ponce's goal in the opening minute of the fourth quarter tying it at 10.
Villanova found the closing kick, though. The Wildcats ran off the next three goals in a three-minute span to take the lead and eventually the win.
Ponce (five goals) and Moaddeli (three goals, two assists) again paced the Buff and Blue with Belanger (two goals) and Carlson also scoring.
Defensively, Runyon tallied eight saves, and Moaddeli posted three steals and two field blocks against Villanova.
