Colonials split a doubleheader Saturday
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Juliette Belanger scored a team-high four goals and Jaleh Maoddeli added three goals and three assists Saturday to help George Washington women's water polo earn a 13-9 win over Iona and a doubleheader split at the Red Fox Invitational.
The Colonials bounced back to knock off the Gaels after falling to No. 22 Marist, 11-4, in the morning at the James J. McCann Center.
GW 14, Iona 8: Belanger and Jochim paced seven Buff and Blue scorers in the afternoon victory.
Ally Jochim put together a fantastic all-around effort with two goals, three assists and a career-high tying five steals.
Alana Ponce (two goals), Katherine Atherton and Kira Bruno were the other scorers in a resurgent offense.
Samantha Runyon made five stops in net to help the Colonials even their record at 2-2 on the season.
No. 22 Marist 11, GW 4: The Colonials hung tough in Saturday's opener before the nationally-ranked Red Foxes pulled away in the second half.
Ally Jochim's goal with 2:25 left before halftime pulled GW within 4-3, but the Colonials scored just one goal the rest of the way.
Marist ran off five unanswered goals in the third quarter to assert control and ultimately claim the home victory.
Belanger scored twice for GW with Jochim and Moaddeli also finding the net.
UP NEXT: GW closes its stay at Marist on Sunday with matchups against St. Francis Brooklyn (9:45 a.m.) and Brown (2:15 p.m.).
