Colonials to play four games over two days at Marist
The Colonials (1-1) are set to face off against No. 22 Marist and Iona on Saturday at the James J. McCann Center before meeting St. Francis Brooklyn and Brown on Sunday.
LAST TIME OUT: GW opened the season Feb. 9 with a doubleheader split at the Princeton Invitational. The Colonials dropped St. Francis Brooklyn, 13-10, before falling to Villanova, 14-11, in the nightcap.
Alana Ponce paced the Colonials by scoring five goals in each game, while Jaleh Moaddeli piled up six goals, four assists and eight steals on the day. Hayden Carlson, a first-year from California, earned a spot on the CWPA Rookie of the Week honor roll after posting three goals over her first two collegiate games.
SAVES BY SAM: Samantha Runyon is back in net for the Colonials, looking to build on a career-best season. The junior from San Diego, Calif., emerged as the Buff and Blue's starter in 2018 en route to career highs in saves (145) and save percentage (.419).
Runyon tallied 14 saves at the Princeton Invitational with six stops in the win over St. Francis Brooklyn and eight more against Villanova. She also recorded a pair of steals.
SCOUTING MARIST: The Red Foxes are off to a 5-5 start, which includes a pair of victories over ranked foes. Most recently, Myriam Lizotte scored three times in their 8-7 overtime victory over then-No. 21 Cal State Northridge on Feb. 10.
Last season, GW knocked off then-No. 25 Marist, 15-11, to snap an 11-game losing streak in the series. Moaddeli posted three goals, two assists and four steals in the victory.
Saturday's meeting is set to be broadcast for free via the Red Fox Network.
SCOUTING IONA: The Gaels rolled off four straight wins last weekend at the Mercyhurst Invitational to improve to 5-7 on the season.
GW has won back-to-back games in the series, most recently downing Iona, 14-12, in overtime last February. Moaddeli netted four goals, including the score that put the Colonials ahead for good in extra time.
SCOUTING ST. FRANCIS BROOKLYN: GW is scheduled for a rematch vs. the Terriers (1-4) after their competitive battle on opening weekend.
The Colonials used a run of four consecutive goals in the third quarter, including three straight from Ponce, to secure the victory at Princeton's DeNunzio Pool. Kelsey Snelgar scored six times in the loss and leads St. Francis Brooklyn with 24 goals through five games.
SCOUTING BROWN: The Bears swept a doubleheader at the Princeton Invitational, beating Villanova and Iona to improve to 6-2 on the season.
Last spring, GW beat Brown for the first time since 2012 during the regular season before falling to the Bears at the CWPA Championship.
These teams are slated to meet again in CWPA play on April 13 at Bucknell.
UP NEXT: GW kicks off its CWPA schedule on March 9 at Princeton before heading to California the following week for four games over spring break.
