Women's Swimming & Diving Takes A-10 Relay Gold

Colonials sit in second with two days to go
GENEVA, Ohio - George Washington women's swimming and diving closed out a strong night at the Atlantic 10 Championships on Thursday by claiming gold in the 200-yard freestyle relay in record time.
The team of Emily Zhang, Meghan Burton, Rebecca Smolcic and Caroline Racke finished in 1:31.53 to set a new A-10 mark in the final race of the night.
The victory -- secured with a strong closing kick from Racke -- propelled the Colonials into second place in the team standings at SPIRE Institute. With two days of competition to go, they have 206 points, which ranks behind only Duquesne (229). Richmond (198) and Fordham (193.5) are close behind in a competitive race.
Zhang picked up GW's first individual medal of the week with a runner-up finish in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:00.83. She was followed in the A final by Jackie Torrez (2:01.44), and Isabela Patino took ninth by winning the B final in a career-best time of 2:03.13.
Smolcic, a first-year from New Zealand, paced the Colonials in the 50-yard freestyle, taking fourth in a career-best time of 23.12 seconds. Racke finished fifth in 23.28 seconds after touching in a personal-best 23.00 seconds in morning prelims.
Gemma Atherley matched her career best in the 500-yard freestyle set at last year's A-10 Championships by finishing in 4:53.69 to take sixth, while Andrea Moussier (11th) and Tali Lemcoff (16th) made the B final.On the diving side, three Colonials scored on the 1-meter board. Gabriella Arendes (248.00) took 10th with a runner-up finish in the B final followed by Rachel Dickinson (15th) and Miranda Simon (16th).
