Zhang, Burton Claim Gold at A-10 Championships

GW women remain second in team standings
GENEVA, Ohio - Meghan Burton and Emily Zhang earned individual gold medals Friday at the Atlantic 10 Swimming & Diving Championships, helping George Washington gain ground on first-place Duquesne.
Burton won the 100-yard butterfly in a GW-record time of 53.97 seconds and also led the Buff and Blue with a sixth-place finish (:55.75) in the 100-yard backstroke, while Zhang took the 200-yard freestyle for the second straight year, edging teammate Gemma Atherley with her time of 1:48.84 by one-hundredth of a second.
Thanks to those efforts, the Buff and Blue enter the final night of competition at the SPIRE Institute in second place with 379 points, 17 back of the defending champion Dukes and 18.5 clear of third-place Fordham.
Jackie Torrez also picked up a medal for GW, earning a second consecutive silver in the 400-yard individual medley in an NCAA B-cut time of 4:16.57, which was a personal best. The junior from California was joined in the A final by first-year Andrea Moussier, who duplicated her preliminary time of 4:22.52 to take sixth.
GW had three of the top nine in a pair of events.
In the 100 fly, Isabela Patino followed Burton in the A final, taking fifth in :54.97, and Caroline Racke won the B final in :55.56.
Andrea Ho joined Burton in the A final of the 100 back and took eighth with Isabel Berdecio winning the B final in :55.77, which dropped nearly three seconds off her initial seed time entering the day.
To close the night, GW's 400-yard medley relay squad of Atherley, Torrez, Burton and Rebecca Smolcic finished fifth in 3:44.83, narrowly missing another program record.
