Colonials set program record in the 400 medley relay
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Andrea Ho, Stine Omdahl Petersen, Meghan Burton and Gemma Atherley combined on a program-record swim in the 400-yard medley relay for GW women's swimming and diving on the opening day of the Sheraton Le Meridien Fall Frenzy Invite hosted by Queens University.
In the final event of the night, the Colonials touched in 3:43.49 to take third place and drop a record that had stood since the 2018 A-10 Championships.Â
The record-breaking performance capped a strong start at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center for the Colonials, who produced at least four individual scorers in each of the three individual events and landed top-three finishes in both relays on Friday. They have totaled 665 points to rank second behind only the host Royals (800) in the 16-team standings with two days of competition left to go.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Rebecca Smolcic had the top individual finish of the day by landing runner-up in the 50-yard freestyle in 23.56 seconds. The sophomore from New Zealand dropped 13-hundredths of a second off her prelim time to take second behind Queens University's Polina Lapshina. Rebecca Brown also qualified for the A final and took eighth in 23.96 seconds. Grace Olivardia grabbed 13th in 24.02 seconds with Patricia Cerri-Droz (18th) and Lynn Zhang (29th) also scoring.
- GW's sprinters teamed up for a third-place finish in the 200 free relay to open the meet with Smolcic, Olivardia, Brown and Burton finishing in 1:33.50.
- Andrea Moussier paced GW with a fourth-place finish in the 500 free, touching in a season-best time of 4:58.00. The sophomore from Mexico was joined in the A final by Atherley, who placed sixth in 4:59.07. Tali Lemcoff (5:01.10, 10th), Erin McCarthy (5:01.84, 11th) and Marissa Martin (5:09.61, 15th) earned spots in the B final with Marissa Brannan (32nd) also scoring for the Buff and Blue.
- Jackie Torrez was the top Colonial in the 200 IM, placing eighth in 2:06.51. Ann Juneau (2:06.03, 14th) and Omdahl Petersen (2:06.96, 15th) swam in the B final with Isabela Patino winning the C final in 2:06.07.
