Men's Basketball Triumphs Over Hood in Exhibition Play, 83-55

The Jamion Christian era got started unofficially on Friday night at the Charles E. Smith Center, and if the exhibition performance against Hood College was any indication of what's to come, GW fans can expect three-pointers galore and highlights aplenty when the games start to count.
Led by first-year Jameer Nelson Jr. and junior Maceo Jack, the Buff and Blue bombed away from deep early and often against the Blazers, and sank 14-of-33 triples in the contest. Nelson and Jack both sunk a handful from long range, as the pair combined to make 10-of-18 threes between them. Junior Justin Mazzulla also got into the act with a 3-of-7 performance, while senior Justin Williams accounted for the team's other make.
As impressive as GW's three-point proclivity and potency was, it was the power of a pair of plays from the Pennsylvania product that punctuated the performance. First, Nelson Jr. followed one of his threes with a block on the other end, after which he corralled the loose ball, rifled a full court outlet pass to Mazzulla who lofted an alley oop to Jack to ignite the crowd. Later, following another three, wearing #12 in his home whites, Nelson promptly chased down the inbounds pass, stole the ball from behind, passed ahead and promptly received the ball back at the rim to throw down another alley oop that lifted the lid off the building.
Nelson finished with game-highs of 20 points and six assists, while nabbing three steals against just two turnovers. Meanwhile Arnaldo Toro was a monster in the middle. The senior from Puerto Rico demonstrated exceptional positioning and footwork to free himself for multiple point blank buckets at the rim. He finished 5-of-6 from the floor, had just one fewer offensive rebound (6) than Hood as a team (7), and his game-high 14 rebounds were more than the visitor's top three rebounders combined.
Mezie Offurum also showed flashes of his capability to make a large freshman-to-sophomore leap with 13 points, six rebounds and five assists in the starting role, while making all three of his free throws.
