WASHINGTON - GW men's and women's cross country will open up the 2018 season with a short jaunt to Emmitsburg, Md., to take part in the Mount. St. Mary's Duals on Friday. The men's race is set to begin at 1 p.m., followed by the women's race. Both will be 5,000 meters in length.
NEW HEIGHTS: Both teams were projected to finish fifth in the Atlantic 10 preseason poll, which was released on Wednesday. The men's team has garnered its first-ever preseason regional ranking, coming in at No. 14 in the USTFCCCA Mid-Atlantic poll to begin the campaign. The women return all six runners who qualified for last year's regional race, where they placed 16th.
CHANGE IN FORMAT:Â As opposed to previous years, when teams were allowed to count this event as multiple duals and thus compete against each team individually, the NCAA has moved to count the event as only one event as it pertains to NCAA qualification. Last year, the women's team went 4-1-1 against the competition at Mount St. Mary's, while the men's squad went 3-1.
THE COMPETITION: GW will compete against local squads, and not those just at the Division I level. The Colonials will see teams from Mount St. Mary's, UMBC, Loyola (Md.), Maryland (women), Navy (women), Johns Hopkins (Division III) and Franklin Pierce (Division II).
