Colonials claim exhibition win over Valencia All-Stars on Saturday
VALENCIA, Spain -- GW women's basketball's fifth day in Spain featured bullfighting, beach and basketball.
After a trip to Valencia's bullfighting museum and a relaxing afternoon enjoying the sun and sand along the Mediterranean Sea, the Colonials took care of business on the court Saturday evening with a 97-73 exhibition win over the Valencia All-Stars at L'Alqueria del Basket.
Eleven Colonials scored, with nine of them netting at least seven points, on the way to winning their second of four games on their 10-day foreign tour. Kayla Mokwuah (13 points, 16 rebounds) and Olivia Gumbs (11 pts, 12 rebs) posted double-doubles to lead the balanced effort.
This time the opposing squad was coached by GW great Anna Montañana ('05), who hails from Valencia and works extensively with her home nation's youth national teams. That connection added some fun to the postgame as the former Colonial doled out hugs, chatted with the squad and led a tour of the sprawling hoops facility in her hometown.
After a back-and-forth start marked by excellent outside shooting from both sides, GW took control late in the first half. The Colonials trailed by one before scoring the final seven points going into the break, taking the lead for good on a three-point play by Sydney Zambrotta.
In the second half, GW stayed on the attack, boosted by a strong effort from the front court. The Colonials' lead reached double digits early in the third, and they continued to pull away down the stretch for the comfortable victory.
Mokwuah, Gumbs and Sarah Overcash (10 pts, 9 rebs) fueled the Buff and Blue with a steady stream of second-chance buckets and free throw chances as the advantage swelled. That trio of newcomers to the active roster combined for 19 of the team's 28 offensive rebounds.
Zambrotta followed up her impressive scoring effort in Wednesday's win in Madrid with 13 more points to tie for Saturday's team lead, while Chyna Latimer notched 11 points on an efficient 3-of-5 shooting effort. The guard/forward from Maryland continues to show her progress heading into her sophomore season, ranking second on the squad in scoring for the trip.
Lexus Levy also reached double figures in Saturday's victory with 10 points on the strength of three of GW's nine 3-pointers.
On Sunday, GW is set to take a bus to Barcelona where it's scheduled to play back-to-back games against Slovenian club ZKK Celje on Monday and Tuesday before concluding the trip on Thursday.
