KINGSTON, R.I. - Rochelle Draper's tie-breaking RBI single in the seventh inning Monday afternoon lifted George Washington softball to a 3-2 win over Rhode Island and a victory in the Atlantic 10 series.
Earlier, the Colonials knocked off the Rams, 6-1, in the completion of a game suspended Sunday evening at URI Softball Complex. They improved to 24-13 and 4-5 in A-10 play.Sierra Lange got it done at the plate and in the pitching circle for the Colonials Monday. In the first game, the freshman from Texas recorded the first two triples of her career to pick up three RBIs and also pitched the final three innings to earn her first collegiate save.
Lange came in on relief again in the second game and pitched four shutout innings to get her eighth win of the season. She allowed just one hit and one walk, allowing the Colonials to erase a 2-0 hole and claim the comeback victory.
For the three-game series, Lange batted .375 (3-for-8) with three extra-base hits, three RBIs and three runs and also compiled a 2.33 ERA in 15 innings with 14 strikeouts.
GW 3, Rhode Island 2: GW was hitless through five innings but managed to produce enough late-game offense to get past the Rams (8-23, 3-5).
Down 2-0, Olivia Ortlieb led off the sixth with a walk and moved to second on a bunt single by Marta Fuentes. Jenna Cone's single plated the first run before Priscilla Martinez tied it with a sacrifice fly.
In the top of the seventh, Morgan Rinehart singled, stole second and scored the go-ahead run on Draper's one-out hit back through the middle. Lange finished it with a 1-2-3 bottom of the inning, ending the game with her fifth strikeout.
Lange also reached base twice in the victory with a pair of walks.
GW 6, Rhode Island 1: GW carried a 3-0 lead through four innings into Monday's action and finished out the victory to snap a six-game losing streak.
In the sixth, Lange extended the advantage with a two-run triple and raced home to score on an error by the third baseman.
Lange took it from there, closing out Rhode Island. She allowed one run on two hits over the final three frames. Sarah Costlow picked up her ninth win after shutting out the Rams over the first four innings Sunday.
Fuentes also had a pair of hits for the Colonials, who recorded eight hits in all. Cone went 1-for-2 to raise her team-leading batting average and drove in a run via sacrifice fly, while Elena Shelepak contributed a hit and a stolen base and scored twice.
ON DECK: Up next is Alumnae Weekend with GW hosting La Salle. The series starts with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday before a 1 p.m. first pitch in Sunday's finale. Former Colonials can register for the festivities here.
