WASHINGTON - Jenna Cone and Elena Shelepak drove in three runs apiece Sunday to help George Washington softball celebrate Senior Day with an 8-2 win over Saint Joseph's on the Mount Vernon Campus.
In their home finale, the Colonials got another complete game pitching effort from Sierra Lange and pounded out 12 hits to take the rubber game in the Atlantic 10 series. They improved to 30-18 and 10-10 in A-10 play, heading into the final weekend of the regular season.Following a pregame ceremony honoring seniors Sarah Costlow, Rochelle Draper, Ashley Pilcher and Morgan Rinehart, GW jumped on Saint Joseph's (21-24, 8-12) with all their scoring coming over the first four innings.
The Colonials trailed 1-0 before Priscilla Martinez and Shelepak came through with RBI singles in the first. They built their advantage to 5-1 in the second via Cone's two-out, two-run double to the wall in right and another RBI single from Martinez.
After Saint Joseph's got one back in the top of the fourth, GW put together a two-out rally to score three more in the bottom of the frame. Cone's second double of the game scored Criza Bulanadi, and then Shelepak plated the final two with her second single of the game.
Lange handled the rest, limiting Saint Joseph's to a pair of unearned runs in her second complete game victory in as many days. The freshman hurler pitched around five hits and five walks to pick up her team-leading 12th victory of the season.
Cone finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. The sophomore from California leads the A-10 with her 58 RBIs and the Colonials with her 15 doubles this season. She reached base for the 32nd straight game to extend her program record.
Shelepak went 2-for-3 with 3 RBIs, while Martinez reached base all three times with a pair of singles and a walk and drove in a pair. Marta Fuentes collected a pair of hits, as well, for her third multi-hit game of the series.
GW finishes the season 19-7 at GW Softball Field on the Mount Vernon Campus, its best home mark in program history.
ON DECK: GW closes the regular season with a trip to Saint Louis for three games next weekend. The top six teams in the conference standings then advance to the A-10 Championship, which begins May 9 at Fordham's Bahoshy Field.
