FAIRFAX, Va. - Elena Shelepak cracked three hits, including a three-run home run, and Sarah Costlow tossed a complete-game gem to help George Washington beat Revolutionary Rival George Mason, 8-1, on Wednesday night to earn a split in an Atlantic 10 doubleheader.
The Colonials fell to the Patriots, 4-1, earlier in the day at George Mason Softball Complex.GW (27-15, 7-7 A-10) bounced back behind Shelepak, who smacked her eighth homer in the opening inning and later added a double and a single. The sophomore from New York finished with three RBIs and three runs scored.
That was more than enough for Costlow, who allowed one run on six hits in her seventh complete game of the season. The senior right-hander improved to 10-4 on the spring with the victory over George Mason (16-24, 6-8).
GW 8, George Mason 1: The Colonials put together a complete effort and cruised past the Patriots in Wednesday's nightcap.
With two outs in the opening inning, Jenna Cone singled and Priscilla Martinez doubled before Shelepak crushed one the opposite way over the right field fence to make it 3-0.
Morgan Rinehart led off the second with a triple to the right-field fence and raced home on Criza Bulanadi's groundout, and pinch hitter Alessandra Ponce's two-out RBI single in the sixth scored Shelepak to extend the lead to 5-0. The Colonials added three more in the seventh, including an RBI hit from Sierra Lange.
Costlow turned in a quality start, attacking the George Mason lineup from start to finish. After the first batter she faced reached on an error, the GW hurler retired the next 11 Patriots. She lost her shutout on a two-out hit in the sixth but settled down to finish out the victory.
Eight different Colonials combined for 12 hits in the second game. Cone singled twice and walked to increase her season average to .420 and extend her on-base streak to a career-high 26 games, while Martinez also picked up a pair of hits.
GW 4, George Mason 1: The Colonials jumped out to a quick lead in the opener but couldn't score over the final six innings.
Marta Fuentes led off the game with a single, stole second, moved to third on Olivia Ortlieb's sacrifice bunt and then scored on Cone's sacrifice fly.
GW kept that advantage until George Mason scored all of its runs in the fourth inning on Jess Curbeira's grand slam off Lange, who allowed seven hits over four innings with one strikeout. Kaitlin Buff followed for the Colonials with two scoreless innings in relief.
GW put runners on base in six of seven innings. The visitors got the potential tying run to the plate two outs in the seventh before a groundout finished it.
Shelepak and Ponce had doubles among GW's five hits. Cone continued her on-base streak with a seventh-inning single after posting her A-10-leading 50th RBI of the season in the opening frame.
ON DECK: GW heads to Dayton for three A-10 games this weekend. The Colonials and Flyers are set for a Saturday doubleheader before concluding the series on Sunday afternoon.
