Softball Drops Doubleheader to UMass

WASHINGTON - George Washington softball closed its series against Massachusetts on Saturday, dropping both ends of a doubleheader at GW Softball Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
The Minutewomen downed GW, 8-2, in the opener before taking the second game, 15-0, in five innings. The Colonials are 22-11 overall and 2-4 in the Atlantic 10 after two weekends of conference play.Priscilla Martinez had hits in both contests for GW, including an RBI double in the opener, to extend her hitting streak to six games. The sophomore catcher finished the series 6-for-10 to improve her season average to .384.
UMass 8, GW 2: The Colonials jumped in front 2-1 on RBI hits by Jenna Cone and Martinez with two outs in the bottom of the third inning but couldn't hold the lead.
The Minutewomen (17-10, 6-0) seized control with a five-run fourth against Kaitlin Buff (6-2) and added two more in the fifth to pad the advantage for Kiara Oliver, who pitched six innings without an earned run to improve to 9-2 on the season.
GW managed just four hits with Cone supplying two of them. Martinez and Draper had the others.
UMass 15, GW 0 (5 innings): The Minutewomen carried momentum into the second game, piling up 15 runs on 14 hits to clinch the sweep via run rule.
UMass went ahead on Melissa Garcia's RBI single off Sarah Costlow (8-3) in the first inning and continued to put the pressure on the Colonials. The visitors scored four in the second and two in the fourth before an eight-run fifth that concluded with a grand slam by Jena Cozza. Cozza and Garcia both knocked in five runs in the game.
GW wasn't able to muster much offense of its own against Meg Colleran (6-4). The Colonials were limited to three hits and shutout for the fourth time this season. Sierra Lange had a double, while Martinez and Alessandra Ponce both singled.
ON DECK: GW closes its homestand Wednesday, hosting crosstown foe Georgetown at 3 p.m. The Colonials will head out on their first A-10 road trip of the season next weekend with a series at Rhode Island.
