The Colonials fell 75-61 in their final non-conference road game
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- In its final road test of the non-conference season, the GW men's basketball took a Final Exam in the Ivy League. With a two-game win streak against Harvard, the Colonials had studied hard and had their chances to pass, but ultimately failed to extend their streak against the Crimson to three.
The Colonials started strong enough and didn't allow Harvard a lead until a Noah Kirkwood three-pointer found its mark with 8:33 to play in the first. The lead changed hands in the next two minutes until a jumper from the right elbow by first-year Mezie Offurum knotted the game at 20 with 6:20, but the close affair that the visiting Buff and Blue found themselves in early turned Crimson from there. The home squad finished the half on a 19-8 run to take an 11-point lead into the intermission, then used a 10-1 spurt to start the second to open a 20-point edge. To its credit, GW fought back with a 7-0 run, but couldn't claw within single digits.
Kirkwood led all scorers with his 20 points off the bench, in a 7-of-12 shooting performance that featured four triples in eight attempts. Justin Mazzulla paced GW offensively with 11 points and four assists, but it wasn't nearly enough. DJ Williams grabbed seven rebounds for the Colonials, but Harvard's advantage extended to the boards too as the Arnaldo Toro-less visitors were handled, 47-29, on the glass. Maceo Jack joined his sophomore classmate in double figures with his 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting (2-of-3 3pt. FG).
Justin Bassey was a solid complementary scorer for Harvard with 13 points on 4-of-9 shooting, including a pair of treys, while Danilo Djuricic netted 11 in the 75-61 Crimson win.
The Colonials will finish 2018 at home a week from today against American in a 2 p.m. contest vs. the Eagles on ESPN+.
