Transfers Armel Potter and DJ Williams combined for 28 points
A day after '18 grad Yuta Watanabe made his NBA debut — extending GW men's basketball's streak of sending a grad to the NBA to three straight years (Patricio Garino '16, Tyler Cavanaugh '17) — a senior-less Colonials team took to the Smith Center floor to preview what's in store for the 2018-19 season.
Transfers Armel Potter and DJ Williams made their Buff & Blue debuts as fourth-year student-athletes, while first-years Shandon Brown and Mezie Offurum (Georgetown Prep) got their first taste of intercollegiate action. Williams led the way with a team-high 15 points in his first test on the Smith Center floor, while Potter netted a baker's dozen. The most-experienced among the Colonials, junior Arnoldo Toro, grabbed a game-high tying 13 rebounds in his 22 minutes of action, while sophomore guard Justin Mazzulla dished a game-high five assists against a single turnover in the 69-64 GW win.
Preseason All A-10 Defensive Team member Terry Nolan Jr. got his hands in on two steals and two blocks to start his sophomore season. Classmate Javier Langarica contributed nine points and seven boards in 16 minutes of play which marked the most extensive game action in the Spaniard's young career.
Catholic's Jimmy Golaszewski shot his way to a game-high 28 points, spurred by a 4-of-9 afternoon from three-point range and a 10-of-12 effort from the free throw line.
The season commences in earnest on Tuesday, November 6th in the team's regular-season opener against the Stony Brook Seawolves at 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
