Men's Soccer Downed at No. 7 North Carolina
9/19/2017 12:00:00 AM | Men's Soccer
The Colonials (2-4-1) had just fallen behind 3-0 in the 44th minute when Osei-Wusu surprised North Carolina on the restart with a long-distance blast. The improbable score came just four seconds after the Tar Heels' goal.
It wasn't enough for GW, though. North Carolina (7-1) scored three goals in the first half and added another after halftime. Alan Winn found the net twice and Zach Wright recorded three assists for the Tar Heels, who are the ACC favorites coming off a College Cup appearance last fall.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- 20th Minute -- The first shot of the night turned into a goal. North Carolina's Zach Wright weaved through a couple of defenders in the box before dropping a pass back toward the penalty spot. David October ran on to the pass and blasted home his third goal of the season. (North Carolina 1, GW 0)
- 23rd Minute -- Wright quickly created another score to pad the lead. This time, the forward's cross from the right side found Alan Winn, who took a touch and fired a shot through traffic that snuck inside the near post. (North Carolina 2, GW 0)
- 44th Minute -- Just before halftime, Winn struck again. He collected a failed clearing pass about 30 yards out and deftly slotted a low shot around GW keeper Thor Arne Höfs. (North Carolina 3, GW 0)
- 44th Minute -- Immediately, the ball ended up in the opposite net. After receiving the tap from Dylan Lightbourn to restart play, Osei-Wusu noticed North Carolina keeper Alec Smir out of position and took full advantage of it. His rocket from midfield climbed over Smir's grasp and under the crossbar for an improbable goal. (North Carolina 3, GW 1)

- 52nd Minute -- Jeremy Kelly finished the scoring for North Carolina. Wright set it up again. After another lengthy run down the right flank, he served a pass across the box to Kelly, who was waiting in front to punch in the goal. (North Carolina 4, GW 1)
NOTEWORTHY:
- Osei-Wusu broke through with his first goal in his 52nd career game. The Maryland native has seven career assists, including one earlier this season.
- North Carolina was efficient in converting four of its six shots on target into goals. The Tar Heels outshot GW, 14-6, in all. The Colonials put three shots on goal.
- Höfs made two saves for GW before being replaced by Jason Re in the 68th minute. Re didn't need to stop any shots to keep the Tar Heels from adding to their lead in his season debut.
- GW is now 1-3 all-time against Top-10 opponents.
UP NEXT: The Colonials return home Saturday to face NJIT. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. at GW Soccer Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
