NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Tyler Cavanaugh has been named the A-10 Player of the Week after leading the GW men's basketball team to a pair of impressive wins at Fordham and over Dayton on Senior Night.
The grad student averaged 25.0 points and 9.0 rebounds on .593 shooting from the field as the Colonials extended their winning streak to a season-best five games heading into the A-10 Tournament on Thursday.
With GW trailing 66-64 at Fordham, he nailed three clutch free throws after getting fouled with 0.9 seconds to play while attempting a three-pointer for the Colonials to escape with a 67-66 win. He also recorded a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds, connecting on 7-of-11 shots and all five of his free throw attempts.
Then, against the Flyers, Cavanaugh put on a show by pouring in 30 points on 9-of-16 shooting, including 6-of-8 three-pointers which matched a career high. Five of those threes came in a first half that saw him tally 19 points, as GW built a 50-33 halftime lead and went on to win 87-81, handing Dayton just its third league defeat. Along with the 30 points, he grabbed eight boards and hit 6-of-7 at the free throw line.
For the week, the graduate student hit 16-of-27 shots and 7-of-10 from three-point range, along with 11-of-12 from the charity stripe. Over the last 12 games of the regular season, he averaged 21.3 points and 9.1 rebounds. This is the second Player of the Week honor for Cavanaugh with both coming in the final month of the season.
GW, the No. 6 seed in the A-10 Tournament, is set to face either No. 11 Saint Louis or No. 14 Duquesne Thursday at 8:30 p.m. in Pittsburgh.
