
Softball Falls to Dayton on Saturday

WASHINGTON - The George Washington softball team fell to Dayton in Saturday's doubleheader to open Atlantic 10 play at the GW Softball Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
The Colonials (13-13, 0-2 A-10) will look to salvage game three on Sunday in the series finale.
GW was edged 1-0 in the first game before falling in the second in six innings, 12-2.
The Colonials came close to scoring in the first inning of the day as freshman Jenna Cone doubled and classmate Priscilla Martinez singled with two outs, but both were stranded as a pitchers' duel ensued.
GW's next opportunity came in the third when back-to-back infield singles from senior Megan Linn and freshman Jessica Linquist put two runners on with no outs, but Dayton retired the next three batters to keep the game scoreless.
The Flyers broke through in the fifth when a double and a single scored the eventual game-winning run.
Junior Rochelle Draper singled in the bottom of the seventh, but GW was unable to bring her around to score as Dayton took game one, 1-0.
Junior Sarah Costlow (6-4, 2.31 ERA) went the distance for the Colonials in the circle, yielding just five hits and one walk in her ninth complete game effort of the season.
Dayton scored early and often in the second game, taking an the lead with two runs on three hits in the first. The Flyers took advantage of an error and four walks in the second to score five more with the help of two hits to take a 7-0 lead.
A walk and a double for Dayton in the fourth added two more for a 9-0 advantage before the Colonials responded in the bottom of the frame. Junior Morgan Rinehart doubled and then distracted the Dayton shortstop to allow classmate Alana Anderson to reach on a fielder's choice with two outs. Linn singled to right to plate one before Linquist singled in another to put the score at 9-2.
The final blow came in the sixth when Dayton struck for three runs, putting the Flyers ahead 12-2. GW was unable to rally in the bottom of the inning, ending the game by virtue of run rule.
The Colonials look to bounce back on Sunday in the series finale. First pitch is slated for 12 p.m.
