WASHINGTON - The George Washington softball squad scored 13 runs in two games to sweep visiting Buffalo on Tuesday at the GW Softball Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
The Colonials (13-11) received strong pitching performances across the board, allowing just four runs between both games.
GW started the scoring early in game one, using a leadoff triple from senior Megan Linn and an RBI ground out from reigning A-10 Rookie of the Week Priscilla Martinez to score one in the first.
The Colonials continued their scoring ways in the second when freshman Elena Shelepak singled up the middle to start the frame. A passed ball and a single from classmate Gabby Gallone scored one and an error later allowed Gallone to cross the plate and put GW ahead, 3-0.
The Buff and Blue added two more in the fourth as junior Morgan Rinehart started off the inning with a double, stole third and scored on the catcher's errant throw. Linn then singled, stole second and scored on a single up the middle from freshman Jessica Linquist to give GW a 5-0 advantage.
Buffalo got its first hit and first run in the fifth, but would not score again. The Colonials added one more in the sixth when Linn doubled and scored on a single from freshman Jenna Cone to put the final score at 6-1.
Linn (3-for-4, 3 R), Cone (2-for-2, 2 BB, RBI) and Shelepak (2-for-3, R) posted multi-hit games for the Colonials in an 11-hit team effort.
Rookie Kaitlin Buff tossed 5.1 innings of three-hit ball to earn the win, yielding one run in a strong outing. Junior Ashley Pilcher came on in relief to throw 1.2 innings without allowing a baserunner.
The Colonials again started the scoring early in the nightcap, when senior Paige Kovalsky doubled to center to drive in two runs in the first.
Kovalsky struck again in the third, driving in Linquist with a single to put GW ahead, 3-0.
Buffalo scored once in the fourth on a sacrifice fly, but the Colonials responded in the bottom of the inning when a two-out error on a Linn ground ball extended the inning. Linquist then singled and Cone walked to load the bases. A walk to Martinez plated one and Kovalsky singled in another to extend the lead to 5-1.
The Bulls mustered two runs in the sixth but GW put the game out of reach when Cone blasted a two-run double in the bottom half of the frame. The Colonials held Buffalo scoreless in the seventh to come away with a 7-3 victory to complete the sweep.
Sophomore Jayme Cone grabbed her first win of the season with a five-innning, one-run outing. Freshman Faith Weber came on in relief for the final two innings.
Kovalsky (3-for-4, 4 RBI) and Linquist (3-for-3, 3 R) each tallied multi-hit games for the Colonials in game two.
GW opens A-10 play over the weekend when Dayton visits the GW Softball Field for a three-game series to conclude a 10-game homestand.
