WASHINGTON - The George Washington softball team closed the Capital Invitational with a 7-2 defeat of Penn State at the GW Softball Field on the Mount Vernon Campus on Sunday.

The Colonials (11-11) avenged a loss to the Nittany Lions on Saturday with a season-high 14-hit effort to close the weekend with a 4-1 record.

Penn State scored once in the first on two hits, but GW responded with a run in the bottom of the inning to even the score. Freshman Jessica Linquist singled to center and advanced to second when classmate Jenna Cone followed with a hit of her own. Senior Paige Kovalsky then drove in Linquist with a single up the middle.

The Colonials took advantage of a pair of two-out errors by Penn State in the fourth, exploding for five runs. With those two runners on, Linquist notched an RBI single before Cone cleared the bases with a single up the middle. Freshman Priscilla Martinez then singled to put runners on the corners for Kovalsky, who again came through with an RBI single through the right side. A walk and yet another base knock, this time off the bat of Morgan Rinehart, plated another to put the Colonials ahead, 6-1, before the side was retired.

GW added one more for good measure in the fifth when freshman Gabby Gallone doubled to lead off the inning and later scored on a first-and-third play to give the Buff and Blue a 7-1 advantage.

The Nittany Lions managed one run in the seventh, but would score no more as GW claimed the 7-2 triumph.

Junior starter Sarah Costlow (6-3, 2.44 ERA) went the distance for the eighth time this season, earning the complete-game win with yet another strong outing.

Linquist (3-for-4, 2 R, RBI) and Kovalsky (3-for-4, 2 RBI) led four Colonials with multi-hit games.

GW continues a stretch of 10-consecutive home games on Tuesday when Buffalo visits the GW Softball Field for a doubleheader.
