BOCA RATON, Fla. - The George Washington women's tennis team was edged, 4-3, by UConn on Wednesday afternoon on the campus of Florida Atlantic.
The Colonials (7-6) battled tough but were ultimately unable to come from behind after an early doubles deficit.
The pair of sophomore Maria Siopacha and freshman Melis Bayraktaroglu won their top-flight doubles contest, but UConn came away with the doubles point after taking the Nos. 2-3 matches.
The Huskies increased their lead to 3-0 with wins at the Nos. 2-3 singles flights. The Colonials then rallied as junior Kamilla Beisenova triumphed in a three-set battle at No. 5. Siopacha followed with a No. 1 triumph in straight-sets to put GW within one at 3-2.
UConn clinched the match at No. 4 before sophomore Victoria Kogan downed her foe in the No. 6 slot in three sets to put the final tally at 4-3 in favor of the Huskies.
The Colonials wrap a week of spring break play on Saturday at Florida Gulf Coast.
