SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The George Washington softball squad closed a busy weekend of play with a victory over Sacred Heart on Sunday on the final day of the UC Santa Barbara Gaucho Classic.
The Colonials (7-10) received a strong, complete-game effort from junior Sarah Costlow in the circle, as she allowed just three hits in seven innings of scoreless ball.
Senior Megan Linn led off the game with a solo home run to left - her second of the year - to give GW an early 1-0 advantage. A pitcher's duel ensued as neither team would score again until the top of the seventh.
Freshman Jessica Linquist singled with one out in the final frame and scored on a double by classmate Jenna Cone. Fellow rookie Priscilla Martinez then homered to left - her second round-tripper of the season - to give the Colonials a 4-0 lead.
Costlow (5-3, 2.69 ERA) made quick work of Sacred Heart in the bottom of the seventh to claim the 4-0 triumph.
Seven different Colonials hit safely on Sunday for 10 hits, led by Martinez (3-for-4) and senior Paige Kovalsky (2-for-3).
GW wraps tournament season at home in the Capital Invitational from Friday-Sunday at the GW Softball Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
