
Softball Drops First Day of Weekend Tournament

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The George Washington softball team fell in its first two games of the UC Santa Barbara Gaucho Classic on Friday.
The Colonials (6-8) outhit Northern Colorado but ultimately dropped a heartbreaker, 6-5, to begin the day. GW then went into extras with San Diego before falling, 8-4.
The Colonials struck early against Northern Colorado as freshman Jenna Cone doubled to drive in junior Alana Anderson to give GW a 1-0 lead.
The Buff and Blue added two more in the second as junior Rochelle Draper doubled to left and advanced to third on a single by freshman Jessica Linquist. Both went on to score on a single by Megan Linn and the ensuing rundown to put the Colonials ahead, 3-0.
GW loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth on a walk, a single and an error. Anderson then singled with one out to drive in two, increasing the lead to 5-0.
Northern Colorado answered in the top of the sixth when a walk and a two infield singles loaded the bases. A grand slam then put the Bears within one, 5-4.
The final blow came in the top of the seventh when a double, triple and a single scored two for Northern Colorado. The Colonials were unable to rally in the bottom of the inning, falling 6-5.
Against San Diego, the Colonials again got on the board first as Cone belted her team-best sixth home run of the season in the bottom of the second.
The Colonials increased their lead in the fourth when Cone again went yard to start off the inning - notching her second multi-homer game of the season. Three-straight singles then loaded the bases for Linn, who singled in two runs to put GW ahead 4-0.
San Diego put up three runs in the sixth on three hits to come within one at 4-3.
The Toreros sent the game to extras with a run on two hits in the seventh, then posted four more in the eighth with the International Tiebreaker in effect. Four walks and two hits for San Diego put the game out of reach, as the Colonials were unable to answer, falling 8-4.
The Colonials outhit both opponents on the day, tallying 10 hits against Northern Colorado and 11 against San Diego.
GW continues tournament play on Saturday, facing San Diego again at 2 p.m. and host UC Santa Barbara at 6:30 p.m.
