GREENSBORO, N.C. - George Washington softball freshman Jenna Cone posted a five-RBI game with a grand slam as the Colonials split the final day of competition at the UNC-Greensboro Invitational on Sunday.
The Colonials (3-6) took a commanding 10-1 victory over host UNCG after dropping the day's opener to Longwood.
GW posted a first-inning run against UNCG after senior Megan Linn walked then scored on a double by classmate Paige Kovalsky.
The Spartans answered with a run of their own in the bottom half of the frame after a walk and two hits tied it up at 1-1.
The Colonials' bats came alive in the second as freshman Elena Shelepak led off the inning with a single. Senior Monica Macchiarulo reached on an error and junior Rochelle Draper's single loaded the bases. A walk to rookie Jessica Linquist plated a run and another crossed the plate when Linn singled. Jenna Cone then blasted a grand slam - her third home run of the season - to give GW a 7-1 lead.
The Buff and Blue added two more in the third when Kovalsky and Cone each notched an RBI on a double and a single, respectively.
GW added the final blow in the fourth inning on a Kovalsky sacrifice fly to put the Colonials ahead, 10-1.
Junior starter Sarah Costlow kept UNCG scoreless after that as the Colonials claimed victory after five innings by virtue of the run rule. Costlow (2-2) allowed just three hits in her complete game triumph.
GW pounded out 12 hits in five innings, with Kovalsky, Cone, Shelepak and freshman Priscilla Martinez each posting two-hit games. Cone ended with five RBI in the contest.
Both starting pitchers in GW's game with Longwood tossed four scoreless innings to start the contest. In the top of the fifth, sophomore starter Jayme Cone quickly got the first two outs before allowing a pair of base runners on a walk and a single. A costly error then opened the floodgates as Longwood would score six, all unearned, to take the lead before junior Ashley Pilcher came on in relief to record the final out.
The Colonials responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the frame on freshman Faith Weber's pinch hit, two-run homer - the first round-tripper of her career.
Longwood put the game away in the sixth, scoring five more - four earned. GW was unable to rally in the bottom of the stanza as the game ended after six by virtue of the run rule with a final score of 11-2.
The Colonials return home to host Bucknell, Monmouth and Quinnipiac in the GW Colonial Classic from March 3-5 at the GW Softball Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
