Softball Falls at UNCG Invite

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The George Washington softball team dropped the opening two games of the UNC-Greensboro Invitational on Saturday afternoon at the UNCG Softball Stadium.
GW (2-5) fell to Longwood, 4-3, in game one before dropping a weather delay riddled second game to the host Spartans, 6-2.
GW got on the board first to begin the day after rookie Jenna Cone smacked her second home run of the season to lead off the second and take a 1-0 lead.
Longwood, playing as the home team, answered in the third as a solo home run, a walk and a single plated two.
Longwood added more in the fourth when an error allowed two unearned runs to score, giving the Lancers a 4-1 advantage.
GW cut the deficit in the fifth when senior Megan Linn's RBI single put the Colonials within two. The Buff and Blue closed the gap to one in the sixth after senior Paige Kovalsky singled to start the frame. Cone then doubled to center to plate one but would be stranded on the bases as the Colonials ultimately fell, 4-3.
In the nightcap against host UNCG, the Colonials posted a pair of runs in the top of the first as junior Alana Anderson and Linn began the game with back-to-back singles. A stolen base by Linn put a pair of runners in scoring position when a UNCG wild pitch allowed Anderson to score. Linn later crossed the plate on a ground out by rookie Priscilla Martinez to give GW an early 1-0 lead.
Neither team scored again until UNCG posted a damaging six-run fifth on three hits - including a two-run home run - four walks and an error.
The Colonials were unable to overcome the deficit and fell, 6-2.
GW returns to action on Sunday with a chance for redemption, playing Longwood and UNCG again in doubleheader play.
