ORLANDO, Fla. - The George Washington softball team won a pair of Saturday games before dropping the weekend finale to Stetson on Sunday afternoon at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex in the D9 Orange Blossom Invitational.
The Colonials (2-3) downed Bethune Cookman and Delaware on Saturday and fell to Stetson on Sunday to wrap the first weekend of play.
GW next competes at the UNC Greensboro Invitational from Feb. 25-26 for four contests.
GW 7, Bethune Cookman 1
A five-run fourth inning powered GW over Bethune Cookman for the squad's first win of the season and first under head coach James DeFeo.
An RBI single by junior Rochelle Draper in the third gave GW a 1-0 lead.
Rookie Jenna Cone smacked her first career homerun - a two-run shot - to increase the Colonials' lead in the fourth. An RBI double by Draper added another and singles by junior Alana Anderson and senior Megan Linn tacked on two more to give GW a 6-0 advantage.
Bethune Cookman got on the board with a run of its own in the fourth.
Freshman Elena Shelepack smacked an RBI triple in the seventh to plate one more and put the final score at 7-1.
Junior Sarah Costlow earned the victory as GW posted a flawless defensive game.
GW 5, Delaware 4
The Colonials took an early lead with run in the first, but Delaware quickly tied it with a solo home run in the second. GW responded with two more runs in the bottom of the inning and followed with another pair in the third to take a 5-1 lead.
The Buff and Blue worked out of a jam in the sixth, allowing just one run as Delaware stranded three to end the inning.
Delaware's seventh-inning rally fell short, pushing just two runs across to give GW the 5-4 win.
Stetson 8, GW 3
Walks proved costly early on as three consecutive bases on balls to start the second frame each came around to score to give Stetson a 3-0 lead. Two hits in the fourth gave Stetson a 4-0 advantage.
The Colonials came alive in the sixth, notching back-to-back singles to start the inning. Freshman Priscilla Martinez then doubled to drive in two. A pair of singles and a sacrifice fly by Draper put GW within one at 4-3 as the inning came to a close.
Stetson put the game away with four runs in the top of the seventh - three unearned - on two hits and two errors.
Three Colonials tallied multi-hit performances, led by Linn's three.
