TIPPING OFF: After winning its A-10 home opener over Davidson on Thursday, the GW men's basketball team looks to make it two in a row as the Richmond Spiders visit the Smith Center on Sunday at noon for a nationally televised game on NBCSN.
LAST TIME OUT: Tyler Cavanaugh led four Colonials in double figure scoring with 20 points and GW led for nearly 38 minutes in a 73-69 win over Davidson on Thursday. Yuta Watanabe keyed the victory with his defensive effort on Davidson leading scorer Jack Gibbs, limiting him to 16 points on 7-of-19 shooting, while also himself adding 14 points, four assists, two steals and a block. GW shot .611 from three-point range (11-18) led by Cavanaugh (3-of-5) and Jordan Roland (3-of-4). The Colonials also recorded a season-high eight blocks in limiting Davidson to .391 shooting from the field.
ABOUT RICHMOND: The Spiders are 2-0 in conference play, and 8-6 overall, after an 82-80 win at Davidson on Dec. 31 and an 80-72 victory over Fordham on Jan. 4. Senior forward T.J. Cline leads the team in scoring (17.9 ppg), rebounding (7.8 rpg) and assists (4.9 apg) while classmate ShawnDre' Jones is one of four guards in the starting lineup and is contributing 16.9 ppg. Another guard, freshman De'Monte Buckingham, is coming off a 22-point effort vs. Fordham.
SERIES HISTORY: GW leads the all-time series, 62-33, including a 32-10 advantage at home. The teams split two games last year - with each winning on the road - as the Spiders prevailed 98-90 in double-overtime at the Smith Center before the Colonials exacted revenge with a 73-61 victory on the road a month later. The last two meetings at the Smith Center have gone into double overtime, with GW taking a 73-65 win during the 2014-15 season.
DEFENDING HOME COURT: GW is 7-1 at home this year, and 49-7 since the start of the 2013-14 season for the best home winning percentage (.875) in the league in that span. VCU is 6-1 this year and 48-7 since 2013-14 (.873), and Dayton is 51-8 (.864).
OVER THE LAST SIX: GW continues to shoot it well from long range, connecting on 45.7 percent (67-of-85) of its three-pointers. Jordan Roland is a team-best 17-of-32 (.531) in that span while Jaren Sina is 17-of-37 (.459). The Colonials have also passed it well, averaging 16.5 assists per game, with Sina contributing a team-best 25 assists against just nine turnovers.
NOTABLE: Roland has scored in double figures in six straight games and leads the team by shooting 43 percent from long range, a mark which ranks third in the A-10 ... Sina ranks t-2nd in the conference in free throw shooting (.900) ... Toro is averaging 2.5 offensive rebounds per game which is third best in the league ... Cavanaugh continues to pace GW in scoring at 16.5 ppg while Watanabe is second with 12.6 ppg.
