DAVIDSON, N.C. - The George Washington women's tennis team battled 2016 Atlantic 10 Championship finalist Davidson on Sunday afternoon, but ultimately fell 4-2 at the Wildcats' Knobloch Tennis Center.
The Colonials (1-1) grabbed two singles victories after trailing 3-0, but could not complete a comeback against a strong Davidson (2-0) squad.
The Wildcats took an early lead with doubles wins at the Nos. 2-3 positions to take a 1-0 advantage.
In singles play, Davidson increased its lead with a straight-set win in fourth-flight play and came within one point of clinching the match after taking the No. 2 bout.
The Colonials then began a comeback effort as freshman Melis Bayraktaroglu battled to take a come-from-behind win, 2-6, 6-2, 7-5, at the No. 3 spot to cut Davidson's lead to 3-1.
Sophomore Maria Siopacha then put the Buff and Blue within one, overcoming a first-set deficit to come away with a 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 triumph at the top spot.
Davidson clinched the match with a straight-set win at the No. 5 position to take a 4-2 victory over the Colonials.
GW opens its home indoor season on Friday when James Madison visits the Southeast Tennis and Learning Center.
