WASHINGTON -- Patrick Steeves, a 6-foot-7 guard/forward from Montreal, Quebec, has joined the GW men's basketball program after graduating from Harvard. Steeves will have two years of eligibility remaining for the Colonials starting in the upcoming 2016-17 season.
"We are very excited about Patrick joining the GW basketball family," said head coach Mike Lonergan. "He suffered numerous injuries while at Harvard, where he graduated with honors, and looks to continue his momentum from a great senior season while pursuing a master's degree in business analytics. We think Patrick will be an impact player for us because of his experience, skill level and versatility."
"I chose GW because of the combination of academics and basketball that the school offers, and because I felt at home during my visit," said Steeves. "I know that under Coach Lonergan and his staff we can have successful seasons and get back to the NCAA Tournament and I can get better as a player. I had a great time with the guys on my visit and know that GW has everything I'm looking for on and off the court."
Steeves played in 26 games for the Crimson last season, averaging 9.1 points on .449 shooting, including .458 from three-point range, in 22.7 minutes per game. The applied mathematics major was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District I first team after boasting a 3.68 cumulative GPA, becoming the first Harvard men's basketball student-athlete to earn the distinction since 2006. In addition to earning CoSIDA Academic All-District honors in 2015-16, he was named to the NABC Honor Roll in 2014-15.
Steeves had his best game in a Harvard uniform against Princeton on March 4, when he scored 25 points on 9-of-13 shooting to lead the Crimson to a 73-71 victory. He scored in double figures 10 times during the season.
Prior to the 2015-16 season, Steeves did not see action due to injury. A member of the Canadian Cadet Men's National Team in 2012, he was the top three-point shooter at the FIBA U17 World Championships in 2012.
Steeves is the seventh newcomer for the Colonials, joining prep players Jair Bolden, Kevin Marfo, Darnell Rogers, Collin Smith, Arnaldo Toro and Justin Williams.
