WASHINGTON - The George Washington softball team fell in both ends of a series-ending doubleheader with Fordham on Sunday afternoon at the GW Softball Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
Defending Atlantic 10 champion Fordham (27-15, 10-1 A-10) jumped out to an early lead in game one, scoring two runs on two hits, including a solo home run.
The Rams took advantage of a pair of GW errors in the second, tallying four unearned runs on one hit and two walks to increase their lead to 6-0 through two innings.
The Colonials cut the deficit in half in the third after sophomore catcher Aiyana Leal-Robles led off the frame with a walk. Classmate Morgan Rinehart then singled before junior Megan Linn smacked a three-run home run to left field.
GW continued to chip away in the fifth as Rinehart again singled then scored on a double by Linn to cut Fordham's lead to 6-4.
In the bottom of the seventh, Rinehart was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Linn again doubled for her third and final hit of the game to put two runners in scoring position. With one out, sophomore Alana Anderson laced a single up the middle to clear the bases and tie the game at 6-6, pushing the game to extra innings.
Neither team allowed a baserunner in the eighth, but Fordham broke the stalemate in the ninth. A leadoff double, a walk and a two-out double plated a pair of runs for the Rams. The Colonials were unable to respond in the bottom half of the inning, giving the Rams game one, 8-6.
In game two, GW scored first as Linn led off the first inning with her third double of the day. An infield single by Anderson created a first-and-third situation, and a well-executed play allowed Linn to steal home and put the Colonials ahead, 1-0.
The Buff and Blue added another run in the third, this time on a solo blast by junior Paige Kovalsky to left field.
Fordham again took advantage of a GW error in the fourth, this time tallying two runs on two hits with the help of a wild pitch to knot the score at 2-2.
The Rams broke the game open in the sixth, beginning the stanza with three runs on four consecutive doubles. A hit batter and another double plated two more before a sacrifice fly and a solo home run put the inning total at seven, giving Fordham a 9-1 advantage.
The Rams added one more in the seventh with the help of a long ball to put the final score at 10-2 and complete the series sweep.
Linn (5-for-9, 4 RBIs, 3 Runs) led the Colonials at the plate on Sunday, while Anderson (3-for-7, 2 RBIs), Rinehart (2-for-5, 3 Runs) and senior Morgan Matetic (2-for-5) each tallied multi-hit days.
The Colonials continue conference play on Wednesday as they visit Revolutionary Rival George Mason for a mid-week doubleheader.
