NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Three members of the George Washington men's basketball team earned accolades for their performances on and off the court as the Atlantic 10 released its All-Conference teams on Tuesday.
Patricio Garino and Tyler Cavanaugh were named to the All-Conference Second Team while Garino also cemented his status as one of the best defenders in school history with a third consecutive selection to the All-Defensive Team. Garino joins Shawnta Rogers (1997-99) as the only players in school history to be named to the All-Defensive Team three times.
On the scholastic side, GW accounted for half of the conference's six-man All-Academic Team, with Alex Mitola, Cavanaugh and Garino earning recognition for their prowess in the classroom.
Garino has enjoyed his best offensive season as a Colonial in 2015-16, averaging 14.2 points per game on a team-best .509 shooting, including a .451 mark from three-point range, which leads the A-10. The senior has been at his best in February and March, averaging 16.8 points on .537 shooting in 10 games. On the defensive end, Garino leads GW in steals (45) and ranks second in blocks (29), and is set to finish his career ranked third on the school's all-time steals list.
Cavanaugh has been GW's most consistent offensive threat, having scored in double figures in all 31 games. He leads the squad with 16.6 points per game, ranks eighth in the league with 7.5 rebounds per game and has eight double-doubles to his name this season. The Syracuse, New York, native also has five 20-point performances and one 30-point effort.
Mitola, who graduated from Dartmouth in three years before transferring to GW for his final season of eligibility, is carrying a 3.83 GPA while pursuing his master's in international trade and investment policy. Garino, a sport, event and hospitality management major with a 3.05 GPA, and Cavanaugh, an economics major with a 3.0 GPA, are both set to earn their bachelor's degrees in May.
GW's three selections to the All-Academic Team extends its conference record in that category to 19 since the award debuted in 1991, and it is just the third time in the history of the award that a school has had three representatives (Richmond in 2002, Duquesne in 2004).
