GW Softball Falls to Monmouth in Weekend Finale

WASHINGTON - The George Washington softball team was edged by Monmouth, 5-4, on Sunday afternoon in the final game of the three-day District Invite at the GW Softball Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
The Colonials (5-6) finished the weekend with a 3-1 tournament mark to begin their home season, defeating Robert Morris, Columbia and Maryland before falling to Monmouth.
The Hawks took advantage of a GW miscue in the first inning to take an early, 2-0, lead with a pair of unearned runs off of sophomore starter Ashley Pilcher. Two hits and another run in the second for Monmouth ended Pilcher's day, bringing junior Paige Kovalsky on in relief to close the inning and the game.
GW bounced back in the third, tying the contest at 3-3 with the help of two hits. Freshman Riley Tejcek was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and moved to second on a single by senior Morgan Matetic. Sophomore Aiyana Leal-Robles dropped a sacrifice bunt to put two Colonials in scoring position. GW's first run scored after a dropped-third strike wild pitch allowed Tejcek to cross the plate. Junior Monica Macchiarulo later doubled to for a pair of RBIs to knot the score.
Monmouth regained the edge in the third, scoring two runs on a walk and two hits with the help of a sacrifice fly to take a 5-3 lead.
A scoreless pitchers' duel ensued until the bottom of the seventh inning when the Colonials threatened to tie the game. With two outs and a runner on second, senior Carlee Gray hit a fly ball to right that Monmouth couldn't handle, allowing a run to score for GW, but the Colonials could not plate another, putting the final score at 5-4 in favor of the Hawks (4-4).
Macchiarulo led GW on the day with a 2-for-4 effort with 2 RBIs.
The Colonials return to action on Wednesday for a doubleheader with visiting Virginia at the GW softball field.
