WASHINGTON - The George Washington softball squad grabbed a pair of home victories on the second day of the District Invite co-hosted by the Colonials and Georgetown on Saturday afternoon.
GW (5-5) took on Maryland (5-13) to begin the day and came away with a 9-7 victory over the Terrapins. Sophomore starter Sarah Costlow (4-1, 2.58 ERA) earned a complete-game triumph.
Maryland scored two runs early on a walk and two hits in the first, but the Colonials answered back in the bottom of the inning to tie the game.
The Terrapins misplayed a fly ball by junior Megan Linn to start the inning with a runner on second. Linn then swiped third before classmate Monica Macchiarulo walked and stole second to put two runners in scoring position. Senior Carlee Gray then singled to plate Linn and advanced to second on the throw. Junior Paige Kovalsky evened it by bunting in the tying run before Maryland escaped the jam.
Maryland tallied two more runs in the second on two walks and three hits to take a 4-2 lead.
In the third frame, the Colonials would again tie the game with the help of two defensive blunders by Maryland, coupled with a double by Kovalsky.
The Terrapins regained the edge in the fourth after a leadoff triple and a sacrifice fly plated one, but GW took a lead it would not surrender in the bottom of the stanza.
Sophomore Morgan Rinehart quickly tied the battle at 5-5 with the second home run of her career to start the fourth for GW. Linn took one for the team and later scored on another RBI single by Gray before Kovalsky blasted a double to put a pair of Colonials in scoring position. Sophomore Rochelle Draper drove in two runs with a single to left to give GW an 8-5 advantage through four.
An RBI double for Gray in the fifth added insurance for the Colonials, as Maryland would add two to their total on three hits, but would not catch up to GW's nine runs. Costlow held the Terrapins scoreless in the top of the seventh to solidify the 9-7 victory for GW.
Gray posted a 3-for-4 performance with three RBIs and two runs scored to lead three Colonials in multi-hit efforts against Maryland.
The Colonials wrapped the day by finishing a 9-4 victory over Columbia in a continuation of Friday's halted game.
Beginning play with the bottom of the sixth inning and a 7-3 GW lead, Rinehart led off with a single up the middle. Macchiarulo brought Rinehart home with her first career home run - a monstrous two-run blast to right center.
In the top of the seventh, with Costlow coming on in relief of Kovalsky's first six innings of work, Columbia tallied one run after a triple and a single, but could not catch the Colonials, as GW came out on top, 9-4, to end the day.
With the victories, the Colonials extend their program-best home win streak to 10 games.
The Buff and Blue conclude the District Invite on Sunday afternoon with a 1:30 p.m. bout against Monmouth at the GW Softball Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
